Light in the Darkness

In New Zealand, about 60 miles from the city of Auckland, lies the magnificent Waitomo Glowworm Caves, famous for thousands of tiny glowworms that illuminate the darkness.

Visitors entering the caves must move very slowly and quietly, without making any noise. Thousands of glowworms hang from delicate threads, producing a breathtaking light. Their glow is so remarkable that it is said to be bright enough to see by. But when they are disturbed by noise, the glowworms can scatter, and the cave can suddenly become dark.

From this amazing creation, we can learn several important lessons that strengthen our faith.

Be a Light in a Dark World

This world is filled with the darkness of sin, selfishness, disappointment, and hopelessness. Just as the glowworms illuminate the darkness of the cave, we, as children of God, are called to shine in this world.

«“You are the light of the world... Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:14–16»

Thousands of glowworms shining together can illuminate the darkness. In the same way, when Christians live together in unity and share the love of God, many people living in darkness can see the truth of God’s Word and find the way to Him.

The Power of Spiritual Silence

One of the remarkable features of the glowworm caves is the silence required to experience their beauty. In our spiritual lives, silence means spending time at the feet of God through prayer, meditation, and fellowship with Him.

If we want God’s light to shine brightly through our lives, we must set aside the noise and busyness of the world and spend quiet time in God’s presence. When we become still before Him, the Holy Spirit can work through us more powerfully.

Do Not Allow the Noise to Put Out Your Light

Just as a sudden disturbance can cause the glowworms to scatter and darkness to fill the cave, spiritual “noise” can affect our lives.

When sinful thoughts enter our hearts, when we allow worldly distractions to control us, or when we become consumed by fear and doubt, our spiritual light can become dim.

When we begin to doubt God’s promises, the light of our faith becomes weaker.

When we give sin a place in our lives, our fellowship with God is affected, and spiritual darkness—fear, discouragement, and hopelessness—can begin to take over.

Keep Shining

God wants you to shine in the dark world and become a guide to others.

Do not allow the noise of this world—sin, doubt, unbelief, and distractions—to extinguish your light. Remain quietly in God’s presence. Hold firmly to the “thread” of His Word, and continue to shine.

Your light may seem small, but when you remain connected to God and shine together with other believers, that light can illuminate the darkness around you.

Let your life reflect the light of Christ.

Shine in the darkness.

Stand firm in faith.

Walk in God’s Word.

And let others see Christ through your life.
